Engaines Primary School and Nursery has a published admission number of thirty-eight children per year group (Reception to Year 6) and 26 children places in our nursery. It is situated in the village of Little Clacton, with the the school celebrating its hundredth year anniversary in 2014. It is a larger than average primary school with 302 pupils organised into eleven classes: one nursery unit; one EYFS unit; three Key Stage 1 classes (Year1, Year1/2, Year 2); three Lower Key Stage Two classes (Year 3, Year 3/4, Year 4); three Upper Key Stage Two classes (one year 5; one year 5/6 and one year 6), that split into smaller classes for morning sessions, that is two Year 6 classes and two Year 5 classes. The school is oversubscribed for the Reception Year, as well as many mid-year applications being received throughout the year (52 applications received between January –November 2017).
On-entry baseline assessment takes place at the start of the Reception year and almost all pupils enter at a stage that is below the expected age of development (noted by Ofsted in our last inspection). Progress is good for most from these starting points.
The percentage of pupils who were eligible for FSM at any time in the past 6 years was below the national average for 2016/17 (School 17%/ National 24%). The percentage of pupils with English as an additional language was significantly below the national average (School 2%/National 21%).Stability stands at approximately 87%, which is in line with national at 85.7%.
The percentage of pupils with SEN support was significantly below national at 9.1%(National at 12.2%): those with an Education, Health and Care Plan/Statement, was broadly in-line with national at 1.4% (1.3% national). We have in this academic year four children that are looked after (1.4%), with one recently adopted.
The school met two of the three government current floor standards, which set the minimum expectations for pupils’ attainment and progress in English and mathematics. The Local Education Authority RAG rated the school as green based on 2017 data, meaning we are not a cause for concern as far as they are concerned.
Changes since last Ofsted
Following our Ofsted inspection in July 2016, the school is now judged as ‘Good’ in all areas: this was last achieved in 2002. School Improvement strategies have been successful. The three priorities outlined by the report are being addressed through our School Improvement Plan and English/Maths Action Plans. The priorities are:
- Pupils consistently use their knowledge of phonics and other literacy skills to improve their spelling.
-This was a main priority last year in our SIP and has continued to be a priority in the Literacy Action Plan.
- Pupils have more opportunities to deepen their thinking in mathematics and to see the ways in which their knowledge and skills can solve problems and have a wider application.
-This is our main priority in our SIP this year.
- Pupils who have good levels of fluency and independence in writing are not slowed in their further progress by excessive preparation and support for tasks.
-We are continually revising our approach to writing and have made changes to the ‘Talk for Writing’ approach that is used across the school, in order that children can get on more quickly with their writing, particularly our more able writers.
In addition to these priorities, we are also acting upon the priorities that came out of our Challenge Partners review in April 2017. These were:
- The drive to improve standards in mathematics was the top priority in the school improvement plan. It now is the number one priority.
- More focused questioning encouraged pupils to think more deeply in order to extend their learning and understanding.
- All pupils were encouraged to develop their oral skills beyond small group talk.
- There was greater consistency in ensuring the appropriate level of challenge for higher attaining pupils.
Focused training has taken place on these priorities, as well as being included in our Performance Management Review objectives.
The introduction of a Growth Mindset ethos and ‘Learning without Limits’ philosophy, underpinned by Kagan structures and ‘Chilli Pepper’ challenges, has enabled our children to become more resilient, confident learners: indeed our Collaborative Learning philosophy was recognised as an Area of Excellence in our Challenge Partnesr review ( April 2017)
We believe passionately about work between schools and organisations, in order to improve our childrens’ experiences and ensure outcomes continue to improve. Our commitment to our four teaching school alliances, ensure we are outward looking (TTSA, NETS, Coast2Coast and Wroxham) We continue our membership of Challenge Partners, part of the ‘Tendring Coast Hub’ led by Tendring Technology College (TTC) and alongside primary schools in the Tendring Education Improvement Group (TEIG). Our Headteacher represents the Mid-Tendring Cluster on this board. We work with three teacher training centres: Thames SCITT ,Tendring SCITT and Goldsmiths. We believe strongly in the importance of supporting aspiring teachers: our Headteacher delivers training to Tendring SCITT and is involved with recruitment: we host the interviews on a very regular basis. We are part of the Mid-Tendring Education Partnership (MTEP), which helps us to provide a range of support for our vulnerable families and our Headteacher is a director on the board. We also work closely with Essex Education Authority through Joanna Bamford, our Educational Advisor: Cathie Bonich is our School Excellence Commissioner.
Our nursery was a new addition to the school in January 2017. We are very proud of this addition to our provision and can already see the children that have attended our nursery making good progress in our reception class. We are also able to offer good support early for our most vulnerable families.
The school provides care for pupils from 8am to 5.30pm by running a breakfast and teatime club. The Healthy Schools Award has been achieved for the second time. In addition, the school was presented with the Attachment Aware School Award, recognising that staff have been trained and take account of the emotional well-being of pupils.
Our web-site further strengthens our community links and helps us fully meet the demands of a modern, forward-thinking school, where communication is key to keeping all our communities updated. In addition we now have Facebook and Twitter links, to keep our families and friends fully informed about day-to-day events.
